    100th ISSUE OF TEACHERS' NEWSLETTER
    Issue 100 of European Schoolnet Teachers' Newsletter was posted in 14 languages to an estimated 30,000 teachers around Europe and beyond on Monday 21 February 2005.

    This newsletter is the only one of its kind and has now been a European feature and source of information since October 1998, very soon after the opening of the European Schoolnet office in Brussels.

    Brigitte Parry, EUN school networking manager, is the editor-in-chief of the European Schoolnet teachers newsletter and its driving force.

    RECORD NUMBER OF SCHOOLS FOR SPRING DAY 2005
    photographer: Georges Boulougouris, European CommissionMore than 6,600 schools signed up for Spring Day in Europe 2005, which took place on 17 March 2005.

    It was the third year European Schoolnet organised the event in collaboration with the European Commission. Many events during the day involved European and national political figures, including Margot Wallström, Vice President of the European Commission.

    Project News

    PEER 2 PEER REVIEW IN FRANCE
    The Peer to Peer (P2P) project did its second peer review in Paris on 7-9 March 2005, following a successful first review in Northern Ireland early December 2004. P2P is an eLearning project which aims to develop a closer dialogue between senior officials working on eLearning policy and implementation in schools.

    It is partly funded by the European Commission's DG Education and Culture. The project is based on the concept of professionals reviewing each other's policy and practice. The peer reviews of the project will also involve schools and inspectorates. The first such review will take place in April.

    CELEBRATE PROJECT REACHES COMPLETION
    The final report of the CELEBRATE project will be submitted to the European Commission at the end of March 2005. The project was completed last November and received excellent feedback from the project reviewers. The project included 35 deliverables.

    CELEBRATE was EUN's biggest project last year. More than 900 teachers registered in the demonstration portal at http://demoportal.eun.org and participated in the pilots that evaluated 1,350 learning objects developed by the project partners.

    EUN SUBMITS CALIBRATE PROPOSAL
    On 22 March 2005 EUN submitted a proposal call CALIBRATE, in response to the IST call 4. CALIBRATE (Calibrating eLearning in Europe) brings together 17 partners in ten countries to carry out a project to support the collaborative use and exchange of learning resources in schools.

    The project builds on three successful IST projects (Celebrate, VALNET and ITCOLE) to develop an open source brokerage system for a European Learning Resource Exchange; an open source learning toolbox to support the collaborative use of learning resources and validate the results in up to 100 schools in seven countries using an advanced validation methodology.

    EUN LAUNCHES MAJOR SCIENCE EDUCATION PORTAL
    The Xplora portal (www.xplora.org) was launched during the Science in Society Forum organised in Brussels, 9-11 March 2005. It endeavours to be a major European hub for the science education community with a wealth of resources, tools and information for science teachers. The portal will benefit from regular upgrades and the next version is planned for June 2005.

    Xplora is set up throught the PENCIL project which brings together a consortium of science museums and networks. The project is supported by the European Commission, which has awarded more than €4m to the consortium.

    Corporate portal Newsletter focus

    NEW CORPORATE PORTAL TO BE LAUNCHED
    This month, European Schoolnet will launch a corporate portal to better serve its partners and networks. It will be a hub for information about European Schoolnet activities and services to schools and policy-makers.

    The website presents the life at EUN and its projects in a clear and attractive way. Creating a corporate site for European Schoolnet is a step towards a transparent approach to inform better our institutional and business partners.

    The portal also aims to be a gateway and a resource tool for our partners, in the coming months more and more useful features and resources will be added.

    SAFER INTERNET STAKEHOLDERS SIGN UP FOR NEWSLETTER
    The Insafe team published the second issue of its Safer Internet newsletter on 10 March 2005. The newsletter highlights safer Internet awareness-raising activities by national nodes, industry and other partners. It also endeavours to inform about emerging technologies and their associated risks.

    The April issue, for example, will focus on mobile and wireless technology. The newsletter is published with the help of the national nodes, reporting on the particular challenges and efforts of the safer Internet community in their countries.

    Meetings and Conferences
    EMINENT CONFERENCE TO TAKE PLACE 8-9 DECEMBER
    EUN's annual high-profile EMINENT conference will take place in Paris on 8-9 December 2005. The event is hosted and co-organised by the French Ministry of Education. It is the 5th consecutive year and more than 200 participants are expected. Last year's conference in Prague brought together high-profile participants from all over Europe.

    EDUCATION PORTALS COMMITTEE MEETS AT THE EUN OFFICE
    The second EPC meeting took place on 11-12 March 2005. The first day featured a series of presentations from EUN projects leaders and among others, a presentation of the Australian education.au portal by Gary Putland its director. The second day, two working groups discussed the issues of interoperability of portals and exchange of educational content.
