SUCCESSFUL EMINENT 2005 CONFERENCE
Widening the uptake of ICT in schools was the theme of EMINENT 2005, European
Schoolnet's sixth annual conference.
This annual EUN Conference, which brought together over 200 experts, took place
in Paris on 8-9 December 2005.
The event was co-organised by European Schoolnet and the French Ministry of
Education, Higher Education and Research. Participants heard over 30 presentations
on practice, policy, content and portals and internet safety..

ELEARNING AWARDS CEREMONY
AT EMINENT 2005
The
eLearning Awards ceremony took place at EUN's annual EMINENT conference on 8 December
2005. More than €24,000 in cash prizes and over €10,000 in software
and equipment were awarded. Describing the prize, EUN Executive director Ulf Lundin
said, "The aim is to reward and give visibility to schools' achievements."

eTWINNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
The first two professional Development workshops were held in Hungary on 24-25
November 2005 and in Malta on 2-3 December 2005.
The participants of the workshops had the honour of being addressed by two
Ministers of Education, Mr Magyar Bálint, the Minister for Education in
Hungary and Dr Louis Galea, the Minister of Education, Youth and Employment in
Malta.

SECOND CSS-NSS GENERAL MEETING IN FLORENCE
A CSS-NSS meeting took place on 6 December 2005 in Florence to discuss the achievements
and future developments of the eTwinning action. The meeting brought together
members of the Central Support Service, representatives of the National Support
Services and the eTwinning project officer.

NOMINEES ANNOUNCED BY EUROPEAN SCHOOLNET
A European panel of experts has now evaluated the top list of projects recommended
by the National Support Services to win this year's eTwinning prizes.

PARIS HOSTS STAKEHOLDER MEETING FOR INTERNET SAFETY
Insafe, the European network of internet safety awareness nodes, organised a meeting
in the framework of the EMINENT conference on 9 December 2005. Entitled "Education
meets industry", it brought together 60 representatives from a wide range
of organisations to meet and discuss internet safety issues.

INSAFE BOOK PRESENTED IN PARIS
The Insafe book was officially presented on 9 December 2005 in Paris at a ceremony.
It is written by young writers from the 16 participating countries in the Insafe
Friendship and Magic competition. The event was organised in conjunction with
EMINENT 2005 and the winners were handed in copies of the book by Horst Forster,
Director of the European Commission directorate for Information Society and Media.

EUROPEAN SCHOOLNET LAUNCHES SPRING DAY 2006 PORTAL
Spring Day in Europe 2006 was launched on 23 November 2005 when the new portal
went live. More than 1,300 schools already registered for the event. This year's
theme is "Debating our Future" and the event will again give a voice
to young Europeans and help teachers organise educational debates on our future
as European citizens. The 2005 edition brought together more than 6,600 schools.

PENCIL CONSORTIUM MEETING IN TOULOUSE
All members of the PENCIL consortium met at Toulouse's space science centre, La
cite de l'espace on 25-26 November 2005. The meeting was very positive and fruitful,
and included a "hands on" session for participants to understand more
about the evaluation procedure for the project as well as a brainstorming session
around the Xplora (www.xplora.org) portal.

P2P REPORTS FOR NORTHERN IRELAND AND FINLAND PUBLISHED
Peer review reports on Northern Ireland and Finland for the Policy strand of the
P2P project have been published online and on paper.
The 28-page publications describe and analyse the ICT policy state of play
in each country, the peer reviewing methodology and the reflections of both the
visiting ministries and the host country.
The project is supported by the European Commission and recently received
approval for an extension until April 2006 when a closing conference takes place
to take stock of the work done in the three areas of the project: policy, school
practice and inspectorate.

WORKSHOP ON QUALITY OF DIGITAL LEARNING RESOURCES
European Schoolnet organised on 30 November a workshop on quality of digital learning
resources during the first European Conference on Innovation for Quality in eLearning.
The conference, which took place in Berlin, was organised by the European Foundation
for Quality in eLearning (EFQUEL) of which European Schoolnet is a founding member.

CALIBRATE WORKSHOP
ON THE USE OF THE CURRICULUM AS METADATA
A CALIBRATE meeting took place on 28-29 November 2005 in Brussels to organise
research into descriptions of national curricula and investigate how different
curricula in Europe can be used in the discovery, evaluation and use of learning
resources.
