    LAST CHANCE FOR REGISTRATION

    The last chance to register for EMINENT is approaching. EMINENT takes place next month on 8-9 December in Paris.

    SPRING DAY 2006, DEBATING OUR FUTURE
    Spring Day in Europe - the successful event to give schools a voice in the debate on Europe - will be organised also in 2006.

    The 2006 edition builds on the positive results and the demand from schools to continue the event. The Spring Day 2006 portal will be launched shortly and the 2006 edition's theme will be "Debating our Future".

    XPLORA ORGANISES CHAT SESSION WITH INVENTOR RAY KURZWEIL
    On 7 November 2005, the Xplora portal hosted the first in a series of chats with leading scientists and innovation experts.

    Ray Kurzweil, one of most far-sighted thinkers in the field of artificial intelligence, was the Xplora chat guest: Xplora (www.xplora.org) is the gateway to science education in Europe supported by the European Commission's DG Research.

    MEETING ON ETWINNING PORTALS
    On 27-28 October 2005, meetings of eTwinning Working Group 1 (Portal) and Working group 3 (Communication) took place in Brussels. Working group 1 discussions focused on how the national and European portals could complement each other.

    Working Group 3 discussed the best and most effective ways to promote the eTwinning action in all European countries and regions.

    EMAPPS.COM PROJECT LAUNCHED IN PRAGUE
    The eMapps.com project, of which European Schoolnet is a partner, had its kick-off meeting early October 2005 in Prague. The project will run for 30 months. eMapps.com is an eLearning project funded under the European Union IST programme to develop an interactive map based game environment running on multiple devices and networks for primary school children aged 9-12.

    FIRST LLE TEACHER MEETING IN BRUSSELS
    Over the past two weekends, 40 teachers met in Brussels and took part in training sessions on designing learning objects (LOs). The workshops were organised by the Linking and Learning Europe project (LLE), which is supported by the European Commission DG Enlargement. For the current school year, LLE focuses on European citizenship and intercultural education. The project website is hosted by the myEUROPE Portal: (http://myeurope.eun.org).

    EPORTFOLIO PLUGFEST: REAL TIME TESTING OF INTEROPERABILITY
    The first ever e-portfolio plugfest was organised in Cambridge on 26 October 2005 by the EPICC project of which European Schoolnet is a partner. The event attracted about 100 delegates to follow the demonstrations of importing and exporting files from one e-portfolio system to another. The aim of e-portfolio plugfest is to bring developers to one place and allow them to test real time interoperability before end-users get their hands on e-learning applications.

    LIFE PROJECT ORGANISES EXPERT MEETING ON LEARNER INFORMATION
    A LIFE meeting took place on 26 October 2005 in Cambridge to take stock of the current emerging issues in the area of learner information and to identify key issues, obstacles and drivers.

    This expert group meeting formulated a number of recommendations addressing technical, semantic, as well as political interoperability issues.

    UN-EUN EVENT FOR SCHOOLS AT WSIS TUNIS
    The United Nations Department of Public Information in collaboration with European Schoolnet is organising an event for schools in connection with the upcoming World Summit on the Information Society to be held in Tunis on 16-18 November 2005.

    Mrs Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, will chat with students from France, Cameroon, the UK and Kenya on the internet about the challenges that girls face at the secondary level of education.
