    CALIBRATE PROJECT FOSTERS ELEARNING IN AN ENLARGED EUROPE
    CALIBRATE was launched in Tallinn on 10-11 October 2005 at a kick-off meeting hosted by the Tiger Leap Foundation.

    CALIBRATE is an IST project supported by the European Commission's 6th Framework Programme.

    32 participants from nine countries attended the event to launch this large-scale 30-month project to support collaborative use and exchange of learning resources in schools.

    POLICY AND INNOVATION COMMITTEE MEETING IN BIRMINGHAM
    The second Policy and Innovation Committee meeting of the year took place in Birmingham on 16-17 October 2005, in connection with the Xchange 2005 conference.

    The central theme of the PIC meeting was quality criteria in the area of eLearning.

    P2P PROJECT INSPECTORATE STRAND MEETING IN BRUSSELS
    The inspectorate strand of the P2P project (P2P) had its second meeting in Brussels on 7-8 October 2005 to take stock of the work done in the different countries reviewed.

    This strand (P2P-i) aims to bring together inspectorates of education in six countries to share practices, policies and review each other's work. A highlight of the meeting was a workshop on defining common quality criteria in evaluating the use of ICT in education.

    COMMISSION CONTRACTS EUN TO PROVIDE SERVICES FOR ITS ICT CLUSTER
    Early October, the European Commission selected European Schoolnet's bids to provide support services for the peer review cluster on ICT in education.

    The tender was submitted by EUN in response to the DG Education and Culture call to enhance the contribution of ICT to the achievement of the Lisbon strategy, notably by providing accurate and timely advice to the European Commission and its ICT cluster.

    EPC COMMITTEE MEETING IN LUXEMBOURG
    EUN's Education Portal Committee met in Luxembourg on 13-14 October 2005, hosted by the Luxembourg Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.

    Highlights of this 3rd EPC meeting were 'new generation portals', 'semantic web' and 'topic maps'. EPC Chair Daniel Weiler welcomed 23 participants from 16 countries.

    XPLORA LAUNCHES EVENT FOR SCHOOLS
    The European science education portal, Xplora, was presented to schools on 13 October 2005 at Technopolis in Mechelen, Belgium. Xplora (www.xplora.org) is the European gateway to science education. It is aimed at teachers, pupils, scientists, science communicators and science educators. It is supported by the PENCIL project, funded by the European Commission's Directorate General for Research as part of the Science and Society action.

    Awards EUN

    ELEARNING AWARDS 2005 EVALUATION BEGINS
    Nearly 800 entries were submitted to the eLearning Awards 2005 through the EUN portal before the 19 October deadline.

    The Awards, now in their fifth edition, aim at identifying and awarding excellent practice in using ICT for learning. The Awards will be presented at a ceremony during the EMINENT 2005 conference in Paris on 8 December 2005.

    ROMANIA APPLIES FOR EUN MEMBERSHIP
    In the beginning of October, Romania applied for membership of European Schoolnet.

    Commenting on the application, Paloma Cecilia Petrescu State Secretary for pre-university education said "European Schoolnet offers a European dimension and facilitates access to specific information. Membership of European Schoolnet is essential for our teachers and students to benefit and achieve active participation".
