EXCELLENT REVIEW FOR CALIBRATE PROPOSAL
The CALIBRATE project received an excellent first evaluation from the European
Commission. CALIBRATE brings together eight Ministries of Education, including
six from the new member states, and other expert and user organisations to carry
out a multi-level project to support the collaborative use and exchange of learning
resources in schools.
What particularly pleased the Commission was that the project fully addresses
the requirements of the tender to strengthen the integration of ICT research in
an Enlarged Europe.

XPLORA TAKES OFF AT ECSITE CONFERENCE
The
new version of Xplora portal (www.xplora.org) was launched at the ECSITE conference
on 10-12 June 2005, held in Vantaa, Finland. Xplora is the European gateway for
science education. It includes new tools to help science teachers in Europe as
well as a fresh design.
The initiative aims to improve science teaching across Europe, to train more
young people in science and encourage interest in scientific careers.

EUN ORGANISES TRAINING ON eTWINNING TOOLS
On 21 June 2005, a training session on the eTwinning tools took place at the EUN
Office. The National Support Services were invited to get a thorough introduction
to the technical functionality and pedagogical use of the eTwinning tools. Almost
all National Support Services participated in the session, some even with several
participants. In all, 35 national eTwinning coordinators were present.

eTWINNING CSS-NSS MEETING IN BRUSSELS
The coordinators of the eTwinning action at European and national levels met on
22 June 2005 to take stock of work done so far and to discuss strategies for the
second year of the eTwinning action. About 60 people took part in the discussions,
including the European Commission.

LINKING AND LEARNING EUROPE PROJECT TO BE LAUNCHED
EUN has signed a contract with the DG Enlargement for its project Linking
and Learning Europe (LLE). It aims to design a set of online resources to
support teaching and learning about European citizenship and cultural diversity.
myEUROPE will set up a team of experienced teachers who will build a network
of European citizenship and intercultural education by implementing online activities
to support fellow teachers to integrate easy ICT into the daily teaching.

COMMISSIONER REDING ACKNOWLEDGES INSAFE'S WORK FOR INTERNET
SAFETY
On 14 June 2005, Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society
and Media gave a keynote speech at the Child safety and mobile phones conference
organised by the European Commission in Luxembourg.
Commissioner Reding specifically mentioned European Schoolnet and its work
as a coordinating node for the Insafe network and as an important partner in the
Internet safety arena.

iCLASS
APPOINTS EUN AS EDUCATION COORDINATOR
EUN has been contracted to provide pedagogical leadership to the iClass project
and the first meeting of the project's Educational Co-ordination Board took place
in the EUN office on 17 June.

P2P INSPECTORATE STRAND EVALUATES ICT IN SCHOOLS
The Peer 2 peer project has a separate strand in which inspectorates throughout
Europe peer review each others work. The focus of the peer review is how
to evaluate the introduction and use of ICT for teaching and learning. Six inspectorates,
Sweden, France, England, Ireland, Scotland and The Netherlands are involved in
this review.

PEER LEARNING TAKES SHAPE IN P2P PROJECT
On 23 June 2005, coordinators of the P2P project met in Brussels to take stock
of the project and its three strands of policy, practice and inspection. Also
under discussion was the evaluation and dissemination of P2P research and findings.

EUROPEAN SCHOOLNET LEADS IN LEARNING STANDARDS
European Schoolnet's Strategy Manager Frans Van Assche has been re-elected as
vice chairman of CEN/ISSS Workshop on Learning Technologies, a European body that
encourages the effective development and use of appropriate standards for learning
technologies in Europe.

EUN DEMONSTRATES ONLINE SERVICE TO HARMONISE THESAURI
During the last international meeting of learning technology standardisation experts
in Paris on June 16-17 2005, organised by CEN/ISSS WSLT, Frans Van Assche demonstrated
an EUN developed online service facilitating the harmonisation of vocabularies
including value lists, glossaries, dictionaries, thesauri, classifications and
ontologies.
