    EUROPEAN SCHOOLNET FEATURED AT THE eLEARNING CONFERENCE
    European Schoolnet was highlighted in several ways at the eLearning Conference.

    In his closing remarks Commissioner Figel's Head of Cabinet, Miroslav Adamiš recognised EUN by saying: "We have seen how the European Schoolnet is using the Internet to support co-operation between schools, offering a virtual extension to the classroom and a European community for teachers…the eTwinning action of the eLearning programme is helping to make such co-operation strategic and long-term.".

    At the conference, European Schoolnet also took part in the exhibition with one featuring eTwinning and the other Celebrate.

    eLEARNING CONFERENCE 2005 IN BRUSSELS
    The eLearning conference took place on 19-20 May 2005 in Brussels. The event was organised by the European Commission's DGs Education and Culture and Information Society under the patronage of Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Ján Figel', Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism.

    European Schoolnet was particularly involved in the workshop on eLearning and schools.

    eTwinning P2P

    eTWINNING PRIZE 2005 ANNOUNCED
    The first eTwinning competition has been announced. It is aimed at primary and secondary schools registered for the eTwinning action in Europe. The competition closes on 20 November 2005, and partnerships may submit projects from September 2005 onwards.

    There are three categories in which eTwinning partnerships can enter their projects. The categories are School collaboration integrated into the curriculum, Pedagogical innovation and Digital resources.

    P2P POLICY REVIEW VISIT TO FINLAND
    The third P2P policy review took place in Helsinki on 9-11 May 2005. After two visits in Northern Ireland and France, the visit benefited substantially from the experiences gained in the previous visits in terms of procedures and mutual understanding of the functioning of the education systems.

    The Finnish National Board of Education organised the visit. An established procedure of peer interaction of ministries as well as expert interventions helped to build up a deep understanding of the issues presented.

    EUN REPORT ON NEW WAYS OF ASSESSING TEACHERS
    Early May, European Schoolnet published the report: "Assessment schemes for teachers' ICT competence". Sixteen European countries took part in the survey which was carried out at the initiative of the EUN's Policy and Innovation Committee and is part of the P2P project.

    The report gives an overview of teachers' certification and training schemes in Europe and shows several examples. The report also identifies possible partners in the field wishing to exchange experience on different ways of evaluating, certifying and training teachers, it will link them with already existing initiatives.

    POLICY INNOVATION COMMITTEE MEMBERS MEET IN BRUSSELS
    EUN's Policy Innovation Committee (PIC) met on 17 May 2005 in Brussels. The central theme of the meeting was leadership in education. It was organised as a workshop with interactive sessions among participants.

    Representatives from national ministries, agencies and organisations involved in promoting the use of ICT in education discussed the meaning of leadership in their countries. They identified effective leadership as a crucial factor to foster the use of ICT in schools.

    INSAFE STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
    European internet safety awareness nodes met in Germany 28-29 April 2005. German node "Klicksafe" hosted the event in the picturesque town of Deidesheim.

    European Schoolnet, as coordinator, and 17 of the network's 19 nodes attended the meeting. The steering committee welcomed new faces from Slovenia and Lithuania, the latest countries to join the network.

    myEUROPE CELEBRATES ITS FIFTH ANNIVERSARY
    myEUROPE is celebrating its fifth anniversary. It was launched in May 2000 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. The project aims to bring together teachers from all over Europe to work together on European topics.

    myEUROPE has set up a network of 4,000 schools focused on teaching Europe with the use of ICT. The project has helped conclude successful online partnerships among teachers from all corners of Europe.

    Meetings

    ESLN MEETS IN BUDAPEST
    The European School Leadership Network (ESLN) consortium group met in Budapest on the 21 May 2005 to discuss the further implementation on Module 2 of the professional development course for European school leaders.

    The ESLN is a project to build a network of school leaders who take part in a series of courses in European School Leadership. The project started in October 2004 and the last of the three modules will be completed in November 2006.

    MEETING ON EXCHANGE OF LEARNING RESOURCES
    On 17 May 2005, representatives from 13 European countries met in the EUN Office to set up a framework to discuss national policy issues on learning resource repositories and to agree on concrete steps towards setting up a pilot network for the exchange of learning resources in Europe.

    The framework is built on the achievements of the CELEBRATE project and the experiences being gained in the eColours project.
