    MELT – NEW BROCHURE ON LEARNING RESOURCES
    A new version of the MELT project brochure is now available. Entitled Building a Learning Resource Exchange for Schools, the brochure explains the aims of the project and its approach to enriching learning resources for schools. The brochure explains how content enrichment is accomplished by experts and then by teachers, using folksonomies and social tagging; both techniques are found in new web 2.0 tools. .

    WOMEN IN IT: DEBATE IN PARIS
    On 7 July 2008, seven teachers and 14 female students from 14 to 18 years old, coming from six different European countries, attended the debate ‘Women in IT’. The event was organised by Microsoft in collaboration with UNESCO, European Schoolnet, INSEAD and the Women’s Forum, which took place as part of the ‘Imagine Cup’ competition. This debate focused on the need for promoting deeper participation of young women in technology and science studies.

    Spring Day

    COMMISSIONER FIGEL’ CHATS ABOUT INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE
    Commissioner Figel’, responsible for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, participated in an online debate for the Spring Day for Europe campaign on 16 June 2008. Students and teachers from 14 schools representing 12 countries participated in the chat. It was the fourth event of this kind since 2005, when Commissioner Figel’ decided to interact with Spring Day schools on a yearly basis. The debate focused on intercultural dialogue and understanding.

    SECOND SPRING DAY MEETING IN BRUSSELS
    On 6-7 June 2008, the second Spring Day for Europe meeting took place in Brussels. National Liaisons and Teacher Advisers from 22 European countries participated with the aim of discussing how to improve this project on European issues. The meeting started with an overview of the current Spring Day activities given by the European Schoolnet team and followed by a brief report on activities organised at national level.

    eTWINNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
    On 29-31 May 2008, 90 secondary school teachers from 27 countries met in Chantilly, just outside Paris, for the last eTwinning Professional development workshop of the 2007/2008 school year. Such workshops aim to raise awareness of best use of the eTwinning portal and other ICT tools, to encourage the development of eTwinning project ideas and plans.

    eTWINNING MANAGEMENT MEETING IN MONTREUIL
    The final eTwinning management meeting for the 2007-2008 school year took place on 13 June 2008 in Montreuil, France, bringing together representatives from the Central Support Service (CSS), National Support Services (NSS), the European Commission and the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) . The topic of the meeting was an overview of the year’s achievements and a look into the coming year.

    FUTURENERGIA 2008-09 CAMPAIGN TO START IN SEPTEMBER
    PlasticsEurope and European Schoolnet announced that the “Energy is our Future” (FuturEnergia) school programme will start in September 2008. The competition is organised for the third year running to strengthen, enhance and support energy education across the curriculum. Schools in the European Union, as well as in Candidate and EFTA countries can participate. This year the competition will focus on the impact of energy consumption upon climate change and energy savings.

    iCLASS VALIDATION WORKSHOPS IN HUNGARY AND POLAND
    The last two validation workshops organised as part of the iClass project took place on 31 May 2008 in Budapest, Hungary and on 4 June 2008 in Toruń, Poland. About 40 teachers attended both events which aimed to validate how the learning platform, developed as part of the project, enhances Self Regulated Personalised Learning (SRPL).

    Learning resources

    MELT SUMMER SCHOOL IN MECHELEN
    Teachers and other stakeholders from different European countries met in Mechelen, Belgium, on 9-12 June 2008, for a summer school on the latest achievements on the MELT portal. The aim of this summer school was to bring together the different groups that have been working on the MELT project: a focus group of expert teachers, a pilot group of practitioners from schools who have been using the Melt portal in their work, and the evaluators and leaders of the project.

    CALIBRATE PROJECT FINAL REPORT PUBLISHED
    The final report of the 30-month CALIBRATE R&D project has now been published. Led by European Schoolnet and supported by the European Commission’s Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme, CALIBRATE ended in March 2008. Far from coming to a full stop, it has put into place key components that will help European Schoolnet to implement a new Learning Resource Exchange (LRE) service for schools.

    Insafe P2V

    INSAFE MEETING BRINGS TOGETHER INTERNET SAFETY NODES
    European Schoolnet, as coordinator of the Insafe network, organised a training meeting for all partners in the project on 23-24 June 2008 in Copenhagen. 25 countries participated in the meeting, and received training on topics including youth panels and gaming. They also exchanged views and experiences, and devised new strategies.

    P2V CONSORTIUM MEETING AT THE EUN OFFICE
    An integration workshop and consortium meeting for the P2V project (Peer to Peer Networking for Valorisation) took place at the EUN Office on 6 June 2008. P2V is a project which aims to help teachers, inspectors and policy makers discover methods, pedagogies and inspection schemes in other countries using peer learning. In this meeting, P2V project partners covered issues linked to the three strands of work of the project: policy, inspection and practice.

    Competition

    DEVELOPMENT YOUTH PRIZE FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
    Following two rounds of evaluation, the finalists of the 2007 edition of the Development Youth Prize have been announced. The highest level grand jury that included representatives from the European Commission's DG DEV and DG EAC, the chair of the European Parliament’s Committee of Education and Culture as well as independent experts in education, art and media has selected one winner and one runner-up from each European member state.

    ELEARNING AWARDS 2008 TO LAUNCH SOON!
    The next eLearning Awards competition will be launched in the next months. The objective is to identify and highlight the best pedagogical uses of ICT in schools. Many teachers use their technical and creative skills to find new and innovative ways of teaching and learning based on the use of new technologies, but often their work is not known outside a small circle. Through the eLearning awards website, which includes a gallery of projects, teachers have a unique opportunity to showcase their projects.

    EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL WEBSITE LAUNCHES SURVEY!
    This July, young Europeans and their teachers are invited to give their opinion in rebuilding an EU environmental website for young people.

    The European Commission’s DG Environment oversees the initiative and has launched a survey to rate proposals for fresh layout, structure, content and features of the existing Environment for Young Europeans (EYE) website of DG Environment. The survey is open until 31 July 2008.
