    EMINENT 2007 CONFERENCE IN BRUSSELS
    230 participants from all over Europe and beyond met on 6-7 December 2007 in Brussels for the seventh edition of European Schoolnet's EMINENT conference.

    Representatives of Ministries of Education, industry partners and practitioners were welcomed by Odile de Chalendar, outgoing chair of the European Schoolnet Steering Committee. EMINENT was opened by Jan Figel', European Commissioner for Education, Culture and Youth.

    The conference theme was "Political priorities for education and the role of technology". The two-day discussions involved policy-makers from European Educational Authorities, as well as by high profile politicians including Prof. Jorge Pedreira, Deputy Minister of Education, Portugal and Krzysztof Stanowski the Under-secretary of Education of Poland.

    MALTESE PROJECT WINS 2007 EUN ELEARNING AWARDS
    The project 'Rescue La Vallette: An Adventure in Time' from the Dun Anton Manche school in Malta won the Young Digital Planet Award for best use of ICT at the 7th eLearning Awards.

    Piotr Mroz, a board member at Young Digital Planet, presented teacher, Emmanuel Zammit, with a crystal trophy, a cheque for € 3,000 and an interactive whiteboard set for his school. 13 schools were awarded in the 2007 eLearning Awards for a total of € 40.000 in cash prizes, equipment and services.

    GENIE MEETING ORGANISED AT EUN OFFICE
    A Global Exchange of Networks in Education (GENIE) meeting took place at the EUN Office in Brussels on 5 December 2007 in connection with EMINENT 2007 which was held on 6-7 December 2007. The aim of the meeting was to introduce participants to European trends, issues and priorities for technology in schools to share information on key national developments.

    P2V PROJECT PARTNERS MEETING IN BRUSSELS
    The second P2V Project Partners Meeting took place on 7 December 2007 in Brussels. Participants reviewed the first year of the project and discussions covered reports on peer learning visits for policy-makers (to Lithuania), schools (to Austria) and inspectorates (to the Netherlands and Lithuania), future plans and administrative issues.

    POLICY INNOVATION COMMITTEE MEETING
    The Policy Innovation Committee met on the 8 November 2007 in Brussels at the EUN Office. Participants discussed many issues around the topic of "How can innovation and ICT be used to contribute to meeting the current challenges facing education and what type of policy strategies could facilitate that contribution?"

    EUN STEERING COMMITTEE ELECTS NEW CHAIRPERSON
    Giovanni Biondi, Director of the Agenzia Nazionale per lo Sviluppo dell'Autonomia Scolastica (formely INDIRE), was unanimously elected new chair of the EUN Steering Committee, taking over Odile de Chalendar from the French Ministry of Education. The election took place during EUN's Steering Committee meeting on 5 December 2007. Giovanni Biondi was officially presented as the new EUN Chair during the closing session of EMINENT 2007 Conference in Brussels on 7 December 2007.

    SAFER INTERNET DAY 2008 COMPETITION
    Insafe, the European network of internet safety awareness nodes is inviting young people to express their ideas about the facts of online life. The Safer Internet Day 2008 Competition "Life online is what you make of it" launched in October 2007 encourages groups of young people between the ages of 5-19 to tell all about their lives online and compete for attractive prizes.

    SPORTS AND CHEMISTRY: CHAT WITH STUDENTS
    On 10 December 2007, the second Xperimania chat took place at the European Schoolnet office. The invited expert was Michel Caillebotte, the Global Marketing Manager for Sportswear from Dow Fibre Solutions. He answered students’ questions on the importance of chemistry in sports.

    The students proposed some very interesting questions about the science of new types of football used by Zidane and David Beckham, how far chemistry can help us to improve sports performance and many others.

    50 YEARS TOGETHER IN DIVERSITY
    Deadline for the "50 Years Together in Diversity" school competition is on 31 December 2007. Teams of students between 14 - 20 years of age, led by two teachers, are invited to take part in the competition. The winning teams will be invited to Brussels to visit the new Museum of Europe in March 2008.

    MYEUROPE WELCOMES THE 8000TH SCHOOL
    The Hans-Furler-Gymnasium Oberkirch in Germany is the 8,000th school to register on the myEUROPE portal. Volker Wacker, who teaches at the school, joined the network while looking for school partners in the UK. The myEUROPE project and its Web portal were launched in May 2000 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. The portal aims to promote European citizenship and intercultural education through on-line activities.

    LEARNING RESOURCE EXCHANGE SEMINAR
    European Schoolnet organised a major seminar for approximately 100 potential Learning Resource Exchange (LRE) Associate Partners in Brussels on 9 November 2007 to highlight LRE benefits for Associate Partners and inform on the range of options on how organisations can connect to the LRE or expose their resources to school via the LRE federation.
