    2007 ELEARNING AWARDS:
    DEADLINE EXTENDED

    Interest in the seventh eLearning Awards competition has been high and so the deadline to submit entries has been extended to 11 November 2007.

    There are already entries from 26 countries and the event has attracted 13 sponsors: Young Digital Planet, Intel, Interwrite Learning, Promethean, SMART Technologies, Apple, Michael, Adobe, Belgacom, Microsoft, SIVECO Romania, Telefónica O2 and UPC.

    Entries are welcome from schools or teachers in EU Member States, EEA Countries, EU Applicant Countries as well as Switzerland and Israel at http://elearningawards.eun.org

    ETWINNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP ST JULIEN’S
    The first professional development workshop for the current scholastic year, took place in St. Julien, Malta 19 - 21 October 2007.

    The primary audience for this workshop was school principals at both Primary and Secondary level and a number of school district administrators.

    ETWINNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP NOTTINGHAM
    The second Professional Development Workshop of the year took place on 26 - 28 October 2007 in the National Centre for School Leadership, Nottingham, UK. The workshop had a specific target audience consisting of members of national, educational inspectorates, regional educational authority representatives, in-service teacher trainers, ICT regional coordinators and policy makers.

    As from 1 October 2007, Romania is a new participant in the eTwinning network. Only a month since the opening day, many Romanian schools showed their interest and some of them are already registered as partners.

    ETWINNING WEEKS 2007: A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN
    The "eTwinning Weeks 2007" campaign proved to be an even bigger success this year as it brought in registrations from over 3,600 new schools as well as over 800 new projects. During the weeks from 17 September 2007 - 19 October 2007, schools across Europe participated in various activities.

    For the third year, the Insafe network coordinated by European Schoolnet organises a European Safer Internet Day 2008 Competition.

    To enter the competition peers are invited to create a multimedia project related to internet safety issues.

    CHILDREN POSE QUESTIONS ON THE SCIENCE OF FASHION
    What's the link between fashion and science? Children taking part in the first Xperimania chat for schools, held on 25 October 2007, got the chance to explore the topic with an expert guest. Children from schools in 10 countries posed their questions to an invited expert, Dr. Susannah Hadley. The topic of the discussion was "Fashion: how nylon and modern artificial fabrics came into our lives".

    CALIBRATE PORTAL NEW VERSION LAUNCHED
    The CALIBRATE portal was launched in an improved version at the beginning of October 2007. The CALIBRATE portal is a one-stop-point where CALIBRATE teachers from primary and secondary schools can find and use free learning resources that are located in repositories or other portals throughout Europe.

    The portal is used by teachers in the CALIBRATE project which lets EUN gather experience for the Learning Resource Exchange, which will be available to the public.

    LODE CHARTER VOTED BY IMS MEMBERS
    On 24 September 2007, the contributing members of the IMS Global Learning Consortium have approved a charter for a new Project Group on "Learning Object Discovery & Exchange" (LODE). This group, co-chaired by EUN, aims at facilitating the discovery and retrieval of learning content stored in repositories.

    It will examine, select, and adapt specifications that are being applied to digital libraries, generic repositories, and learning repositories.
