    EUN-NIME MEETING OPENS NEW COOPERATION AREAS
    Yasutaka Shimizu, President of NIME, the Japanese National Institute of Multimedia Education and Kumiko Aoki Associate Professor, visited European Schoolnet on 22 March 2007. The aim of the meeting was to discuss each other’s activities, highlight synergies and identify possible areas of cooperation.

    NIME is an independent administrative institute in Japan providing educational materials and services for higher education. It is actively involved in the creation and the provision of eLearning courses and resources either through its own production or by the development of repositories of learning resources.

    EUN ESTABLISHES LINKS WITH TURKEY
    Innovative class in TurkeyOdile de Chalendar, European Schoolnet’s steering committee chair, met representatives of the Turkish ministry of education on 8-10 March 2007.

    The aim of the meeting, which was organised over two days, was to strengthen the links between European Schoolnet and Turkey and to establish a dialogue for future membership of the country.

    eTWINNING CAMP 2007: CELEBRATING EUROPE WITH eTWINNING
    The eTwinning Prizes 2007 winners are heading to Città del Mare, Sicily, from 25-29 April for the second annual eTwinning Camp.

    Awarded on 23 February 2007 in Brussels as the top eTwinning projects in Europe for the 2005-2006 school year, teachers and pupils from the three winning projects will spend three and a half days together in Sicily to meet their project partners face-to-face and learn about ICT tools.

    DYP WINNERS ACCOMPANY COMMISSIONER MICHEL TO RWANDA
    25 winners and their teachers of the Development Youth Prize (DYP) will leave from Brussels for a five-day trip to Rwanda from 17-21 April 2007. They will accompany Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid.

    This trip is a unique opportunity to witness real developmental work in Africa. The programme of the trip is related to the three themes of the competition: health, education and environment.

    CALIBRATE PROJECT MEETING IN PRAGUE
    The findings and recommendations of the first review of the CALIBRATE project were discussed by partners in a full project meeting in Prague on 7-8 March 2007, hosted by the Centre for International Services, of the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Education Youth and Sports. The CALIBRATE project had its first major review by external experts in December 2006. Some readjustments to the project work plan have been made in light of the useful comments and recommendations of the reviewers but, generally, the project activities are proceeding as originally envisaged.

    MELT PARTNERS MEET IN LEUVEN
    On 20-21 March 2007, MELT Consortium partners took part in the second full project meeting hosted by Professor Erik Duval at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL).

    MELT is a content enrichment project funded under the European Commission’s eContentplus programme. The aim is to create more and better metadata for a critical mass of learning resources from 17 public and private sector content partners in order to enhance their discovery and cross-border reuse.

    FIRST SPRING DAY 2007 MEETING IN BRUSSELS
    On 3 March 2007, the first meeting among the Spring Day 2007 EUN Office Team, the SD2007 Pedagogical Advisory group and the SD2007 National Liaisons took place in Brussels, at the Hotel Crown Plaza.

    Some 50 people attended a full day meeting. In the morning, the EUN Office SD2007 team introduced the project, its aims and goals. ENA from Luxembourg also presented the educational resources that they will offer to be featured on the SD2007 portal.

    ENERGY SCHOOL COMPETITION: DEADLINE EXTENDED
    Since its launch in November 2006, the “Energy is our Future” project has been growing each day to offer three major opportunities to European schools: a web-based activity, online chats and a school competition. To date, over 1,500 contributions have been published.

    Due to the overwhelming success of the school competition, an additional number of teachers have expressed their intention to participate with their classes, the project team has therefore decided to extend the competition deadline from 15 March to 22 April 2007.

    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP DUBLIN
    The sixth professional development workshop of the 2006/07 series took place on 22 - 24 March 2007 in Dublin, Ireland. The workshop included 100 participants, from 23 countries and was specifically for school principals.

    SECOND INSAFE PLUS TRAINING SESSION IN VIENNA
    While temperatures in Vienna dropped to winter levels on the first day of spring, Insafe, the European safer internet network coordinated by European Schoolnet, organised its second Insafe network’s training meeting on 22-23 March 2007.

    Conference Publication

    EUN PARTICIPATES IN EC-TEL 2007
    Frans Van Assche, EUN Senior manager interoperability, is organising the workshops at the Second European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning held on 17-20 September 2007. The EC-TEL Workshops are intended to bring together pre-conference communities to work together on a common topic for technology enhanced learning.

    The context of this work should be the conference theme of “Creating new learning experiences on a global scale”. Instructions for submitting your own workshop proposal can be found here.

    eTWINNING PEGAGOGICAL ADVISORY GROUP PUBLISHES NEW BOOK
    The third and final booklet in the series entitled ‘Reflections on eTwinning’ has just been published by the eTwinning Pedagogical Group (PAG).

    The series of books examines the pedagogical aspects of eTwinning and this issue focuses on the areas of Professional Development and Cultural Understanding and Integration in an eTwinning context.
