    INSIGHT NEWSLETTER LAUNCHED
    Insight – EUN Observatory for New Technologies and Education, launched a newsletter service in June. The newsletter aims to highlight the latest articles, reports and documents published on the Insight portal.

    This first issue leads with a story on the Norwegian country report and includes other articles on Policy, Interoperability, School Innovation and the latest thematic dossiers on Insight about Innovation in education.

    XPLORA TEACHERS CONFERENCE ORGANISED AT CERN
    The Xplora Science Teachers Conference took place on 15-18 June 2006 at CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory in Switzerland. The event was organised within the Pencil project and more than 80 teachers and educators from all around Europe attended the conference, which combined high level presentations with workshops and practical science activities .

    INSIGHT THEMATIC DOSSIER ON INNOVATIONT
    Just published is Insight’s new thematic dossier on ‘Innovation’. Resulting from the discussions which took place during the EUN’s Policy and Innovation Committee meeting in Barcelona on 23-24 February 2006, this publication sheds light on the complex issues linked to innovation and change.

    Published electronically and on paper, it brings together a series of articles and analyses to describe innovative projects and practices in Europe..

    PIC MEETING TAKES STOCK OF THE WIND OF CHANGE IN ICT POLICY
    The second Policy and Innovation Committee meeting (PIC) of the year took place on 6 June 2006 in connection with Xchange 2006 in Belfast. The theme of the meeting was: the Next Curve: the evolution of educational policy and its impact on ICT strategies of agencies and ministries.

    The PIC meeting was hosted by the Xchange 2006 Conference and the Northern Ireland Department of Education..

    EMAPPS.COM SUMMER SCHOOL DEMONSTRATES USE OF GAMES
    On 21-25 April 2006 a summer school for teachers took place in Nida, Lithuania, the workshop was organised within the eMAPPS.com project. It was the occasion to experiment for the first time the possibilities of using games in the learning process in schools.

    Among the games the teachers played included the “ Amber Room game”, which has been developed in the eMAPPS.com project. The objectives were that the teachers start to know the technology to be used and the possibilities to set up learning games with it.

    LINKING AND LEARNING EUROPE PROJECT REACHES COMPLETION
    The Linking and Learning Europe project came to an end on 31 May 2006. The aim of the 12-month project was to set up a group of teachers to design a set of online resources to support teaching and learning about European citizenship and cultural diversity.

    The project built on the existing myEUROPE network, which groups about 5,500 schools. Several workshops were organised during the project, a group of 40 teachers produced 300 modules in 25 languages on teaching Europe at school as well as 40 practice examples.

    SPRING DAY CHATS FOSTER EUROPEAN DIALOGUE
    The Spring Day 2006 chat session closed on 15 May 2006. The last chat of the school year took place at the EUN Office between European schools and Mariann Fischer Boel, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.

    The chat activities took place between February and May 2006, more than 3,000 students from all the Member States, Acceding and Candidate Countries participated in the chats.

    GREEN WEEK SCHOOL COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED
    The Green Week School Competition winners were announced at the Green Week event in Brussels, on 1 June 2006. School children from Latvia and Greece took the top honours in this year's school competition.

    The two awards categories were ‘paintings and drawings’ and ‘digital videos’. The winners were selected out of more than 7,000 entries, representing schools from almost all European countries.

    CSS-NSS MEETING HELD IN AUSTRIA
    The meeting between the eTwinning Central Support Service (CSS) and the representatives of the National Support Services (NSS) was held in Vienna, Austria on 8 June 2006.

    The CSS was represented by Ulf Lundin, EUN Executive Director who chaired the meeting. The theme of the meeting was an overview of the year’s achievements and a quick look into the coming year.

    FINAL ETWINNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
    The last two eTwinning Professional development Workshops were held in Lillehammer, Norway on 18-20 May 2006 and in Vienna, Austria, on 8-10 June 2006.

    In Norway the meeting was attended by 95 participants from 19 countries, 60 of them were teachers. In Austria, the meeting was held in conjunction with the CSS-NSS symposium, some 70 teachers from 20 countries attended the meeting.

    LIFE-FEST TAKES PLACE IN PARIS
    The LIFE Fest 2006 took place on 13-14 June 2006 at ‘Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie’ in Paris.

    The two-day event organised, among others, by the LIFE project (Learning Interoperability Framework for Europe) brought together 90 key developers and instructional designers from the public and private sectors.

    The aim was to investigate ways to improve interoperability of content packages and Learning Management Systems (LMS) and pave the way towards a certification process at the European level.

    LEARNING RESOURCE EXCHANGE WORKSHOP IN SLOVENIA
    On 7-9 June 2006, European Schoolnet organised a Learning Resource Exchange (LRE) developer workshop in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The workshop was hosted by the Laboratory for Telecommunications of the University of Ljubljana.

    EUN RELEASES UPGRADED LRE APPLICATION PROFILE
    In May, European Schoolnet completed the revision of the Learning Resource Exchange Application profile, which is used to describe digital learning resources in the form of metadata. The application profile is a tool which makes it easier for users to find online learning resources.

    EMINENT 2006: 10TH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE
    This year EMINENT will be the occasion to celebrate EUN’s 10th Anniversary Conference in Bruges, Belgium. It will be a special high profile event which will take stock of 10 years of work to promote the uptake and use of ICT in schooling as well as a look at the next 10 years.

    NEW FACES IN EUN
    In the past two month, three interns joined the EUN Office for a series of internship with the development team. These included Sereyvath Chea from Cambodia, Steven Jones from the UK and Colin Knight from Canada. Sereyvath will more specifically be involved in the Calibrate project, Steven worked at the EUN Office on assessing usability of the eTwinning portal and Colin will be in the EUN Office working on the LIMBS, MINOR, and LRE projects.
