Computing our future: Computer programming and coding - Priorities, school curricula and initiatives across Europe

01/10/2014 - Anja Balanskat, Katja Engelhardt

As programming skills become ever more important and a core competency for all kinds of 21st Century workers, this is leading individuals to seek out new ways of learning to code. Many new initiatives are appearing where start-ups and non-profit organisations offer innovative and engaging training approaches to coding and many businesses are also searching for innovative approaches to finding the coders they urgently need. During July and August 2014 European Schoolnet launched a survey with its Ministries of Education to get a more consistent picture on the topic of computer programming and coding skills in national, regional or school curricula across European countries. This report presents the main findings of this survey where 20 Ministries of Education gave an overview of their current initiatives and plans.
