EmpowerED: A comprehensive toolkit for the European EdTech ecosystem
EmpowerED (2023–2025) was a European Union-funded initiative designed to support closer collaboration in the European digital education sector. The project connected European EdTech initiatives; policymakers; researchers; educators; and various other EdTech ecosystem actors, by creating a space for exchange, training and capacity-building opportunities that address priority topics on emerging technologies.
Final outcomes
- EdTech policy map: A strategic framework and "living document", based on , that outlines the conditions needed for innovation, focusing on building stakeholder trust, strengthening digital skills, and securing sustainable funding across the EdTech ecosystem.
- European EdTech map: Highlighting over 1,500 EdTech organisations, this tool helps users explore innovative products and find local collaborators.
- Two MOOCS for educators wishing to become pedagogical mentors in the EdTech design process, and for stakeholders who need to make EdTech procurement decisions at school, regional or national level. The Project also offered six mini-MOOCs on EdTech entrepreneur key competences.
- Six open source guidelines addressing the needs of EdTech start-ups, the creation of multi-stakeholder testing environments and the sustainable collaboration within the ecosystem (link to all reports).
- The EmpowerED community page allowing members to connect with each other and have access to a repository of resources, including 120 good examples from EdTech collaborations across Europe. You can register to the community here, or log-in with your Scientix® credentials
- A match-making tool prototype to connect EdTech developers and facilitating organisations with educators acting as pedagogical mentors.
- A series of annual State of Play reports to translate complex research into clear key findings for all actors in the EdTech ecosystem. Access research reports here.
Visit the ‘Goodies' page to explore bite-sized versions of all reports, guidelines and collections of good examples.
Continued professional development outputs
The project produced courses and guidelines to keep the momentum of EdTech going in schools, for teachers, school leaders, entrepreneurs, startups, and researchers. These are all compiled on the EmpowerED continuing professional development page.
EmpowerED launched several Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to empower individuals with the specific skills needed to thrive in the digital education space.
- For educators: The ‘EmpowerED educators: Becoming pedagogical mentors for EdTech co-design' MOOC is for teachers ready co-design in EdTech, exploring why teachers can become instrumental parts of the EdTech landscape.
- For decision-makers: The ‘Navigate EdTech – Choosing wisely for learners' course is designed for school leaders, teachers, and education decision-makers who head technology purchase and integration.
- For entrepreneurs: The series of six mini-MOOCs is for those taking their first steps towards entrepreneurship in the education sector.
Expert guidelines and research
The project produced six guidelines that provide practical tools and guidance to address pertinent needs EdTech ecosystem stakeholders. The guidelines support:
- EdTech start-ups in evolving an EdTech prototype into a fully-functional and pedagogically sound product
- The creation of EdTech testbed environments that are based on the ‘triple helix' approach: they address EdTech entrepreneurs' needs to validate prototypes and products in live educational settings by training educators to act as Pedagogical mentors in EdTech' and by integrating rigorous research methodologies
- Multistakeholder collaboration across the European EdTech Ecosystem
Through these resources, EmpowerED ensures that the momentum gained over the last two years continues to support thriving EdTech systems for better learning.
