Building human-centred data cultures in schools: Lessons from the Agile EDU project

The Agile EDU project was established to address the rapid digitalisation of education. Coordinated by European Schoolnet and co-funded by the European Union, this initiative applied an 'agile' methodology (iterative cycles of research and stakeholder feedback) to ensure student data is used ethically, safely, and purposefully to enhance learning. The project delivered actionable and useful insights, lessons learned, and recommendations developed with educators, policymakers and EdTech providers across Europe on how to use students' data responsibly, purposefully and ethically.
Key insights from Agile EDU:
All of the outputs from the Agile EDU project are compiled in the Actionable Knowledge Base, which offers multiple outputs relevant for all stakeholders in education who wish to learn the key factors in meaningful use of education data.
The knowledge base consists of dialogue labs with experts, case studies, learning stories, comparative analyses, policy recommendations and guidelines. While the project has concluded, these resources form a permanent archive to support the digital education ecosystem.
Other outputs of the Agile EDU project include:
Strategic recommendations and guidelines
The knowledge base informs a set of policy recommendations which will have implications across the digital education ecosystem. Agile EDU also provided a set of guidelines for practitioners who are interested in introducing what they learned from the project in their schools.
- • Policy recommendations for meaningful use of data in education
- • Guidelines for educators and school leaders
Research and comparative reports
- • A Literature Review which defines key concepts, enablers, and challenges regarding data in education.
- • A Comparative Overview Report: A comprehensive analysis of data regulation and legislation across 20 EU Member States.
Practical tools for the classroom
- • Learning Stories: First-hand accounts from practitioners documenting 'good practice' and lessons learned.
- • In-depth case studies into the real-life impact of digital decisions in schools.
- • Teacher Resource Pack (MOOC): Modular training for upskilling educators in learning analytics and tool evaluation.
