The STTAIRS project, funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, aims to design training programmes that integrate artificial intelligence tools for teachers' professional development.

The STTAIRS project is committed to build a more equitable educational ecosystem, one that is prepared for the challenges of the future. The fundamental pillars of which are inclusion, the well-being of the entire educational community and the ethical use of technology.

Over its duration, STTAIRS aims to:

  • Strengthen teachers' AI competences through specialised training and collaboration with European training and research centres.
  • Integrate AI-enhanced instructional design into online teacher training, using adaptive content, personalised learning pathways, and accessible digital resources.
  • Foster transnational cooperation by creating communities of practice, joint training initiatives, and shared professional development frameworks.
  • Investigate the impact of the AI-enhanced online teacher training on AI competences and draw lessons to guide schools, universities, and training centres across Europe in delivery of AI teacher training.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping how we teach, learn, and understand digital competencies. While AI offers enormous potential, from personalised learning to automated feedback and improved accessibility, it also brings new challenges for schools and teacher training systems. Educators need structured, reliable support to understand how AI works, how to use it responsibly, and how to integrate it meaningfully into everyday teaching.

Online learning environments remain central to teacher training because they are cheaper and accessible. Yet they rely on teachers' ability to engage with them with minimal social and tutor support. AI tools can potentially support teachers while they are following remote training, by helping them reflect and maintain motivation to learn, while managing their wellbeing in a digital environment. There is a need to explore AI tools that can be integrated into remote learning environments and test their usefulness.

The STTAIRS project responds to these challenges by developing an innovative AI-enhanced online teacher training programme. It promotes digital readiness, inclusion, sustainability, and international cooperation, aligning with the priorities of Erasmus+ 2025 and the EU Digital Education Action Plan.
