Since 2014, 15 July marks the World Youth Skills Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the importance of equipping young people with the skills to engage in the world of work and entrepreneurship; The theme of this year is: "Learning and skills for life, work, and sustainable development".

Today, 8 February 2022, we celebrate Safer Internet Day – the annual flagship campaign under the European Strategy for Better Internet for Children. With a theme of "Together for a better internet", the day calls upon all stakeholders to join together to make the internet a safer and better place for all, and especially for children and young people.

In the digital world, our daily lives and careers are defined by emerging technologies. New technological solutions like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, Big Data, Robotics and Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) come with a wide range of opportunities for innovation and growth.

Digital transformation of different activities and increased use of the Internet have undoubtedly brought a lot of advantages to the world. However, unfortunately, it also affected the unalluring side of social relationships, including bullying, making such vulnerable categories as children and young people not feeling safe both offline and online.

A study conducted by researchers at Stanford shows that young people have difficulty judging the credibility of online information. As children of the internet and major media consumers, young people primarily get information and communicate online and through social media . Still, the speed with which they receive and come into contact with information does not give them the hindsight to judge its reliability. With the proliferation of fake news, schools have long-run educational programmes to teach children media literacy to decipher the content received.

To help bridge the digital skills gap in Europe, the European Commission has created the Digital Skills and Jobs Platform, the new home of high-quality information, initiatives and resources on digital skills from across Europe.

Digital technologies provide us with a world of possibilities at our fingertips. Never before have we enjoyed so many opportunities to learn, exchange, participate and create. In 2021, this statement rings truer than ever: in the past year, we have collectively taken a digital leap, and digital means of communication have proven nothing short of vital for our societies to keep functioning in the face of a global health crisis.
