Promoting STEM education in schools: A European priority

The European Union Promoting STEM Education in Schools final report examines how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is promoted across European school systems and recognises the pivotal role of European Schoolnet in supporting STEM education, through Scientix®.

This report presents a detailed analysis of the current state of STEM education across EU school systems. Drawing on EU and national reports, literature, vast stakeholder consultation work, and policy documents. It identifies remaining structural and systemic challenges, policy responses, good practice examples, and opportunities for systemic improvement towards the delivery of inclusive, future-oriented STEM education.

The report highlights that, despite persistent structural challenges, change is coming thanks to new methods and initiatives. The study points to promising national strategies, innovative teacher training models, investments in infrastructure supported by EU funds, and inspiring Erasmus+ projects that show impact and scalability.

Among the targeted recommendations, the report mentioned promoting and disseminating the whole-school STEM approach through practical guidance, case studies and peer-learning initiatives - leveraging EU education platforms, such as Scientix, eTwinning and the European School Education Platform, run by European Schoolnet.

The integration of digital tools, innovative pedagogical practices, collaboration and interdisciplinarity are powerful levers for modernising STEM education and convert classrooms into innovative learning environments.

The role of Scientix

In particular, the study features the role of Scientix® , European Schoolnet®'s flagship Community for Science Education, as one of the key solutions to mobilise educators across Europe, fostering a strong community of practice.

At the same time, it highlights European Schoolnet's commitment towards a future-ready STEM education that will benefit Europe's STEM talent and strategic competitiveness, providing resources, sharing good practices, mapping policies and organising projects.

By its very nature and founding principles, Scientix addresses many of the obstacles highlighted by the report. By bringing together educational practitioners, Ministries of Education, industry partners and academics, the Scientix community continuously demonstrates how innovative educational practices, collaboration, and interdisciplinarity can transform the classroom for the better!

There is no better moment to observe this than during the annual Scientix STEM Discovery Campaign. The 2026 edition reached new heights and showcased with exceptional passion and commitment how integrated STEM education, informed technology use, STEM career role models and committed continuous professional development can impact the teaching and learning experience. This year, the campaign involved over 1 million participants across 50+ countries through more than 9000 activities, including 800,000+ students and 200,000+ educators.
