Safer Internet Day: digital well-being in the spotlight
In 2026, the Safer Internet Day focuses on cyberbullying, a challenge affecting around one in six adolescents in the European Union. Addressing cyberbullying is a key EU priority as reflected in the European Commission's Cyberbullying Action Plan.
Safer Internet Day is supported by the European Commission, with funding provided by the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL). Find out more about the European Commission's strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+).
European Schoolnet initiatives supporting Safer Internet Day
Committed to bringing digital well-being and online safety to schools as part of its Work Programme priorities, European Schoolnet is involved in several initiatives that directly address these areas in education and directly contribute to the objectives of Safer Internet Day:
- • Better Internet for Kids (BIK) 2025–2027: Underpinned by the BIK+ strategy, this European Commission initiative brings together a wide range of stakeholders and actions to ensure better and safer digital experiences for children and young people. SID is organised within the framework of Better Internet for Kids (BIK) (2025-2027) activities by the Insafe network (coordinated by European Schoolnet) and INHOPE (the International Association of Internet Hotlines), on behalf of the European Commission. It aims to bring about a safer and more responsible online space for children and young people.
- • digi.well (A whole-school approach to well-being in a digital world) is an EU-funded initiative that supports schools in addressing the well-being of children and young people in an increasingly digital environment. The project recently published Digital well-being starts with us: A consultation report guiding schools from awareness to action, which explores what digital well-being means in today's educational contexts and provides a foundation for future school-level strategies.
- • WINDEE (Well-being in digital education ecosystem) is a European Commission funded project which focuses on enhancing digital well-being in European education.
- • PERMA-Digital supports schools in strengthening well-being within digital education by providing evidence-based solutions that can be scaled up and integrated into education policy and practice.
Looking ahead to 2026, European Schoolnet will also launch CyberKind: Empowering school communities through SEL education against cyberbullying. The project will provide education resources to foster active youth participation, peer-to-peer exchanges and supporting materials that encourage the benefits of school and helpline cooperation.
Beyond projects, European Schoolnet also shares knowledge and promotes an evidence-informed debate by making available reliable data through different publications and events, bringing together research, policy and practice.
To explore the extent to which national education systems are addressing digital well-being in school, European Schoolnet's report "Well-being in digital environment in school" presents a comprehensive overview, across 20 education systems, of national policies, curricular developments, teacher training initiatives, and monitoring mechanisms related to well-being of students and teachers in increasingly digital learning environments.
The European Schoolnet Perspective paper "Wellbeing in a digital world" encourages some policy actions from evidence from research.
The resources and insights from the 2025 School Innovation Forum in Lisbon, under the theme 'Digital well-being in schools: from awareness to action' brought together all stakeholders involved in preparing future generations for the digital age and shared exclusive insights from experts.
These initiatives reflect European Schoolnet's ongoing commitment to a safer internet.
