World mental health day: Enhancing digital well-being

On World Mental Health Day 2025, European Schoolnet highlights initiatives promoting digital well-being and online safety - recognising their strong connection to mental well-being.

Every year on 10 October, the world comes together to mark World Mental Health Day. In today's hyperconnected society, our digital environments have a profound impact on mental well-being. European Schoolnet recognises not only the challenges that exist online, but the many opportunities as well. That's why we've made digital well-being and online safety a core focus of our work, leading multiple projects that help learners, educators and others in the education community build healthier, more balanced relationships with technology.

To support digital well-being, European Schoolnet is coordinating a new Erasmus+ funded project digi.well.

Digi.well aims to explore, develop and foster a whole-school approach to well-being in a digital world, building upon an in-depth understanding of the needs of school pupils, teachers and a wider range of school professionals, while developing and implementing a set of self-assessment, capacity building and outreach tools.

Well-being is closely linked to mental health. To address this, digi.well supports schools in promoting well-being by helping them become central spaces for young people to build healthier digital habits.

A key output of the project will be the self-assessment tool launching in 2026. It will be a questionnaire for schools to assess how effective current infrastructures, policies, and practices are in managing the use of digital technology, with particular attention to their impact on pupil well-being. This questionnaire will be complemented by an evaluation rubric, allowing users to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their school environment, recognise potential risks to student well-being, and pinpoint opportunities for improvement.

Additionally, as part of the European Year of Digital Citizenship Education 2025, the Council of Europe and European Schoolnet will host a webinar on 6 November 2025 called ‘Well-being online and the voice of young people'. The event will explore how schools, families and policymakers can work together to promote well-being – both online and offline – while sharing best practices and amplifying young people's voices. Registration is available here.

The EC-funded Better Internet for Kids (BIK) (2025-2027) initiative will continue to constitute a major building block of the digital well-being and online safety activities developed by European Schoolnet and its ministries.

BIK is built on three pillars:

  1. To ensure young people's digital world is safe
  2. To ensure that young people have the skills, knowledge and support they need
  3. To ensure young people have a say

Education professionals, parents, pupils and policymakers can find plenty of resources on online safety, well-being and how to ensure young people have a good and healthy online experience.

WINDEE (Well-being in Digital Education Ecosystem) is a European Commission funded project focusing on enhancing digital well-being in European schools. It will achieve this by equipping students and educators with tools and training that support the healthy, focused and engaging use of digital technologies.

The project will design and implement a digital well-being framework for teachers and schools, promoting responsible technology use, balanced digital learning environments and data privacy.
