What if being small was actually a strength? Across Europe, thousands of schools in rural and remote areas are doing things differently: managing mixed-age classrooms, leaning into their communities, and using limited resources in surprisingly innovative ways. A new online course launching this autumn will aim to learn from them and support others to do the same.

The Smart schooling and networking MOOC, developed by European Schoolnet in collaboration with INDIRE, is more than just another training, it's a space for teachers and school leaders to reflect, connect and reimagine what's possible in small or isolated school settings.

Drawing from a recent European report that surveyed schools in 12 countries, the course takes real-life practices and turns them into practical, inspiring content. Participants will explore how schools are adapting leadership roles and innovating their teaching practices, with the help of digital technology and strong alliances with their local communities, to transform into vibrant community centres, often against the odds.

Whether you're teaching in a village school or supporting education at regional or national level, this course is designed to spark new thinking. It's an opportunity to learn from peers across Europe, share your own experiences, and contribute to a shared vision for the future of small and rural schools.
