As education systems across Europe look to develop, the Future Classroom Lab (FCL) model is helping schools rethink how we teach, learn, and design learning spaces. From flexible classrooms to teacher empowerment, the FCL initiative is inspiring change across borders.

In the latest episode of the European Schoolnet Podcast, we're joined by Sampo Forsström, educational developer and FCL Ambassador in Finland, and Martin Thun Klausen, pedagogical IT consultant and FCL Ambassador in Denmark. Together, they explore how their countries are translating the FCL concept into real, transformative practice. The conversation dives into:

Transforming learning spaces across Europe

In Denmark, the FCL initiative is anchored by a 1,000-square-metre innovation lab in Copenhagen, serving both pre-service and in-service teachers. It's a place not only for training, but also for experimentation, dialogue, and collaboration with visitors from across Europe.

In Finland, FCL work is embedded in the teacher training schools of the University of Eastern Finland, connecting research, pedagogy, and classroom design. The country now hosts a growing network of 10 FCL sites and 35 active ambassadors, all committed to reimagining education from the ground up.

Empowering teachers, engaging students

While classrooms may look different across borders, the need for meaningful, engaging, and future-ready education is universal. Both guests emphasised the importance of teacher involvement, local ownership, and continuous professional development. They also underscored the role of school culture in adopting innovative approaches and the importance of making small, practical changes that lead to larger transformation.

Looking ahead: a European vision for innovation

With national funding shifting and priorities evolving, both Finland and Denmark are looking to European collaboration and shared initiatives to keep momentum going. Their experiences offer practical insights and inspiration for schools and policymakers across the continent.
