European Schoolnet joins forces with ALL DIGITAL to enhance Europe's digital skills during All Digital Weeks 2025 campaign
About ALL DIGITAL WEEKS 2025
The 2025 edition of the campaign runs under the motto "Educated Digital Citizens" with the aim of empowering every European to face the rapidly-transforming digital world, embracing the opportunities it opens up, yet certain they can navigate the challenges it undoubtedly brings about, with confidence and ease. The pace of development and uptake of AI and other breakthrough technologies, means that digital technologies have become integrated within the very fabric of our society. The campaign is a call to action to bring digital skills closer to all European citizens, regardless of where they live, to enhance career prospects, personal development, and on a broader scale, a more competitive and sustainable Europe.
The All Digital Weeks campaign, which kicked off in 2010, has succeeded in helping more than 1.5 million people get online for the first time or enhance their digital skills. In 2024, the campaign reached 70.000+ people, organising over 720 events together in collaboration with over 130 partners.
Background
Digital technologies have fast permeated every aspect of our lives – from the way we make decisions at work to the way we communicate with one another or stay in touch with our loved ones. According to the latest State of the Digital Decade report, less than 60% of the EU's adult population had at least basic digital skills in 2023, yet some level of digital competence is needed in almost all jobs today. More than half of EU companies struggle to find employees with the right skills, resulting in vacancies going unfilled. Bringing quality jobs to people is also at the forefront of the ‘Union of Skills' package – one of the first key priorities of the first 100 days of the new Von der Leyen Commission, adopted by the College of Commissioners on 5 March 2025. EU strategic ambition, reflected in the Digital Decade targets, wants to see 80% of EU citizens with at least basic digital skills and 20 million ICT specialists by 2030.
Digital initiatives led by European Schoolnet
To ride the wave of growth the digital transformation promises, Europeans need to be equipped not just with the right digital tools and skills to excel in their studies and careers, but also with top-tier skills that enable them to make the most out of the increased uptake of digital in our social lives. Navigating the new and ever-changing digital landscape means being mindful of aspects like digital well-being and the importance of technology in staying connected with the world. Digital well-being is at the heart of three campaigns organised under the umbrella of the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) initiative, run by the Digital Citizenship Team of European Schoolnet, on behalf of the European Commission. The AdWiseOnline campaign, delivered on behalf of the European Commission (DG CNECT and DG JUST), aims to raise awareness about manipulative digital marketing practices and enhance young people's understanding of digital marketing and online advertising so they understand their online rights as young consumers. This year's Safer Internet Day, an annual global celebration campaign for a safer and better internet, took place on 11 February. The MediaSmartOnline campaign is an EU-wide media literacy awareness-raising campaign in collaboration with the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs). More broadly, the BIK initiative, inspired by a European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+), provides information, guidance and resources on better internet issues from the joint Insafe-INHOPE network of Safer Internet Centres in Europe, and other key stakeholders.
European Schoolnet, a network of 30+ Ministries of Education from across Europe leading educational innovation, operates key European services in education on behalf of national Ministries, the European Commission, and industry partners. It has a long-standing track record (since 1997) in bringing digital skills closer to European citizens, students, teachers and the workforce. The European Schoolnet Academy is Europe's first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platform offering high-quality free courses for primary and secondary teachers as well as other educational professionals. Basic and digital skills are at the forefront of the Digital Skills & Jobs Platform project – the home for digital skills and jobs in Europe.
Since its launch in 2021, the Digital Skills & Jobs Platform has succeeded in solidifying its place as a central hub for all things linked to digital skills and jobs in Europe, counting a vibrant and diverse community of over 15.000 active stakeholders bridging the digital divide. Dedicated to everyone, the Platform is a place where prospective students can find specialised new Master's courses developed by leading EU universities and embark on a new career in technology. Those looking to up or re-skill can find relevant training opportunities and resources to bring their digital competencies up to speed and at their own pace, with flexible learning paths made available to all. Skills intelligence reports and highlighted news articles give an overview of the main updates and trends on national, EU, and global levels.
With 22 National Coalitions for Digital Skills and Jobs in the EU Member States connected to the Platform (and more to come!), news, strategies, and good practices on the national level can now reach the citizens of Europe in mere minutes. National Coalitions also play an important role in helping the EU reach the objectives set out by the Digital Decade. In collaboration with National Coalitions and the European Commission, the Platform has also supported the organisation of the European Digital Skills Awards since 2023, putting the spotlight on the most impactful projects that aim to bring digital competencies closer to all Europeans, with hundreds of inspiring applications received each year. Since April 2023, the Platform has become the home of the Cybersecurity Skills Academy, a European policy initiative, part of the 2023 European Year of Skills, that aims to bring together and improve the coordination of existing cyber skills initiatives in order to close the cyber security talent gap, strengthen the EU cyber workforce, and boost EU competitiveness, growth and resilience.
