New Publication: "School Strategies for Fostering Students' Digital Competences"

European Schoolnet is pleased to announce the launch of a practical and comprehensive resource designed to help school leaders develop or refine their digital education strategies.

Entitled "School Strategies for Fostering Students' Digital Competences: Guidelines for School Leaders," this publication draws on 15 case studies across eight European countries—Czechia, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, and Switzerland—to show how schools can increase their digital capacity while empowering students with the skills needed to excel in today's interconnected world.

"How are you preparing students not just as users of technology but as responsible digital citizens? Empowering students to navigate the digital world safely and ethically is just as important as teaching them technical skills."

What's Inside the Guidelines?

  • Part One delves into why digital competence is essential in modern education, exploring artificial intelligence, whole-school strategies, and leadership roles in facilitating systemic change.
  • Part Two offers a practical roadmap featuring seven actionable steps to guide school leaders through assessing current digital readiness, setting clear priorities, engaging the whole school community, and establishing monitoring and evaluation processes.

In each section, concrete examples demonstrate how to align technology with broader educational goals, encourage innovative teaching methods, and address critical challenges such as digital equity and responsible AI use.

Real-World Case Studies

Each of the 15 case studies highlights a distinct school context—rural and urban, primary and secondary—providing hands-on lessons in leadership, stakeholder collaboration, and the impactful use of technology in learning spaces. This diversity ensures every school can adapt proven practices to its unique environment, whether it's creating maker spaces, building innovative teacher teams, or integrating digital ethics into the curriculum.

"By fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement, schools can better prepare students to thrive in a digitally interconnected world."

Who Are These Guidelines For?

While primarily aimed at school heads, principals, and leadership teams, the Guidelines are also relevant to teachers, policy makers, digital coordinators, and anyone involved in shaping a school's digital future. Whether you're looking to strengthen digital competence, encourage teacher development, or upgrade infrastructure, you'll find practical direction and inspiration.
