Valuing Teacher Voices: How European Schoolnet projects address key challenges

On 5th October, the global education community celebrated World Teachers' Day, a moment dedicated to recognising the indispensable role teachers play in shaping the future of learning. This annual event not only pays tribute to educators but also calls attention to the need for urgent educational reforms. This year's theme, "Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education," emphasises the importance of amplifying the voices of teachers, who face significant systemic issues like staffing shortages, worsening working conditions, and limited participation in decision-making processes.

At European Schoolnet, we believe that teachers are much more than mere implementers of educational policies—they are critical partners in shaping the direction of education. Their experiences and insights offer invaluable contributions to how education should evolve. Through various initiatives, such as the European Schoolnet Academy (EUNA) and the Future Classroom Lab (FCL), and the ContinueUP, and the 21st Century European Teacherprojects, we are committed to empowering educators. These programmes provide teachers with innovative tools and a collaborative professional community, ensuring their input is central to their professional development.

The Future Classroom Lab: a decade of innovation in education

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the FCL Ambassadors, a milestone that underlines the critical role teachers play in the design of learning environments and innovative pedagogies. FCL allows educators to reimagine how classrooms operate by blending new pedagogical approaches, technology, and spatial design. By promoting localised versions of Learning Labs, FCL ensures that teachers can adapt forward-thinking teaching methods to their own unique contexts.

FCL Ambassadors, who are appointed by national Ministries of Education, are instrumental in promoting educational innovation. Their advocacy for teacher-led approaches has helped overcome key challenges like integrating new technologies and engaging students in an ever-evolving world.

European Schoolnet Academy: 10 Years of empowering teachers

In parallel with the FCL celebrations, the European Schoolnet Academy is also marking its 10th anniversary. This platform has been pivotal in advancing teacher professional development across Europe by offering cutting-edge online courses that keep educators at the forefront of educational trends and prepare them for emerging challenges.

Aligned with the theme of this year's World Teachers' Day, the European Schoolnet Academy's Autumn 2024 Course Catalogue offers high-quality resources designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for their role in educational reform. This long-standing commitment to ongoing professional growth is vital, particularly as teachers push for more influence in how educational policies are crafted and implemented.

Addressing teachers' needs: ContinueUP and the 21st Century European Teacher

Teachers are playing a pivotal role in the successful implementation of the European Commission's Digital Education Action Plan, but they need further support to adapt and be part of the digital transformation.

EU funded projects, such as ContinueUP and the 21st Century European Teachers help educators keep pace with the rapidly changing landscape of education.

ContinueUP focuses on lifelong professional development throughout their entire career, recognising that the growth of teachers does not end once they enter the classroom.

At the same time, the 21st Century European Teachers project addresses the increasing demand for teachers to develop critical 21st-century skills  and how they can approach and develop teaching in emerging subject areas  such as technological empowerment, sustainable learning, entrepreneurship and playful learning.

As education systems worldwide strive to prepare students for an unpredictable future, this initiative ensures that teachers have the resources they need to nurture these essential skills in their students. By equipping teachers to meet these demands, European Schoolnet help educators to take an active role in shaping the future of education.

As part of this commitment to supporting teachers, the European Commission has launched a new version of the SELFIE tool available for early childhood teachers in celebration of World Teachers' Day. Originally designed for primary and secondary education, SELFIEforTEACHERS now provides early years educators with a structured self-reflection to assess their confidence and experience in using digital technologies. Completing this self-reflection, which takes around 25 minutes, helps educators identify their strengths and areas for growth. For more information, educators can explore the introduction leaflet.

As we reflect on World Teachers' Day, European Schoolnet reaffirms the importance of valuing teachers' voices in educational reform. We invite educators, policymakers, and stakeholders to explore our latest Perspective Paper, Issue 13: "Playful Learning in the Age of Datafication and Digitalisation." This paper highlights the crucial role teachers play in adopting innovative teaching methods, addressing global challenges.

Building an educational future led by teachers' insights is essential. By listening to and empowering educators, we can reshape classrooms to benefit students and the inspiring teachers who nurture them daily.
