Balancing Screen Time in Schools: Insights from European Schoolnet's Latest Agile Collection of Information

As the debate over screen time intensifies, European governments are implementing measures to tackle smartphone use in schools. Recent initiatives, such as Ireland's new smartphone bans in schools underscore the urgency of addressing the impact of digital devices on students' well-being and academic performance.

In this context, European Schoolnet's latest Agile Collection on Information: Screen time and digitalisation provides a vital overview of how 17 education systems across 16 countries are responding to these challenges. This report provides up-to-date information as of August 2024, exploring a range of strategies implemented to manage screen time effectively. Key findings highlight concerns over the mental and physical health impacts of excessive screen time, including issues with concentration and an increased risk of device addiction.

Education authorities are taking diverse approaches to address these issues. Many are empowering teachers with guidelines and expert support to regulate device use, while others are integrating technology policies into broader school initiatives. Some countries have even issued regulations to restrict device use, though no actions have been taken to limit digital learning resources.

The Agile Collection of Information by European Schoolnet aims to facilitate timely exchanges of ideas and strategies among education stakeholders. By applying agile principles, this initiative focuses on collaboration and continuous improvement, providing evidence-based insights and best practices to support educational transformation.

For a more in-depth exploration of these issues, our debut podcast episode, "Screen Time and Mobiles in Schools," features discussions with Norwegian experts Niamh Ni Bhroin, Associate Professor at the Department of Nordic and Media Studies, University of Adger, (Norway) and Anne Mangen, Professor of literacy at the Norwegian Reading Center, University of Stavanger (Norway). They explore the nuances of digital integration in education, offering valuable perspectives on managing screen time effectively.
