18/04/2013
eTwinning - the community for schools in Europe - reached 200 000 registered teachers last week! Congratulations to all!
Today marks a momentous occasion in the history of eTwinning. Welcome to our 200000th member!
Established in 2005, eTwinning has grown steadily and is now Europe’s largest online community for teachers offering opportunities for collaborative project work, social networking and continuous professional development.
In 2012 we had 40000 new registrations. This is a 10% increase on 2011. To demonstrate this point, there was a 15% increase in the number of eTwinning projects. So, not only are we getting more members, the members we have are doing more. View the full statistics on the eTwinning website.
To learn more about eTwinning have a look at the work of the eTwinning Conference 2013, which took place in Lisbon between the 14th and the 16th of March 2013, and was deemed a great success.
More than 500 teachers from 33 countries attended the Conference, which provided an opportunity to reward the best eTwinning projects and to share good practice through presentations and workshops.
On the first day, conference participants were welcomed by a number of representatives from European and national level, including Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Sport, Media and Youthwho recorded a video message. Delegates were also welcomed by Nuno Crato, the Portuguese Minister of Education and Science. The keynote speaker was Professor Bob Fryer, Chair of the Campaign for Learning UK, a Board member of NIACE and a Visiting Professor at several British universities. He is quite enthusiastic about eTwinning: “I think the great advantage of eTwinning is that it allows young people to exchange ideas with other young people who have quite different backgrounds and live in quite different circumstances.”
