Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming education and training systems across Europe, offering new opportunities for personalised learning, student assessment, intelligent tutoring systems, and data-driven decision-making.

At EU level, the European Union's Digital Education Action Plan emphasises the importance of digital competence for both learners and educators and encourages the responsible use of AI tools to enhance teaching and learning processes.  The EU's Artificial Intelligence Act, proposed in April 2021, establishes a risk-based approach to AI governance, where educational AI systems—especially those used for student assessment or behaviour monitoring—are considered high-risk and are subject to strict requirements and high data quality standards, to prevent discrimination and reinforce trust in AI applications within educational settings. In addition, the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, developed by the High-Level Expert Group on AI, provide a foundation for ethical AI deployment.

To support Ministries of education, schools, teachers and other key players involved in Europe's education understand better what the potential and the challenges are to integrate this powerful technology in schools, European schoolnet  is  offering independent evidence, fostering collaboration and peer learning opportunities across countries and sectors and providing actionable resources to equip decision makers, schools, teachers and students.

At the same time, the organisation supports  the European Union (EU) to ensure that the use of AI in education is ethical, inclusive, and aligned with fundamental rights, through its  active participation in several EU funded educational initiatives, such as those under the Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ programs. Moreover, we support the important role of the Digital Skills and Jobs Platform in providing basic and advanced learning paths focused on AI with several trainings and resources, as well as other learning content.

Projects

ACT-AI Academy

ACT-AI Academy (European Academy for Teachers' skills and competences development for an effective AI Integration in education) aims to establish a pan European academy for student-teachers, in-service teachers, and school leaders, focusing on equipping and/or upskilling them with the competences required to utilise AI effectively and ethically within the educational context, as well as part of their professional engagement. Additionally, the project aims to raise awareness about the potential benefits of AI for enhancing educational outcomes and supporting the holistic development of students while addressing societal and ethical challenges.

STTAIRS, Strengthening-teacher-training-with-AI

The project aims to create teacher training programs and systems enhanced with AI tools, leading to increased teacher satisfaction, well-being, professional development (both pedagogically and digitally), and promoting inclusion and sustainability

The AI-Driven Educators Academy (AIDEA)

AIDEA proposes a forward-thinking approach to teacher professional development, equipping educators with the tools and strategies necessary to navigate the AI in education landscape. Through hands-on training, ethical frameworks and inclusive methodologies, AIDEA aspires to prepare educators for a future where AI enhances, rather than replaces, the human elements of teaching and learning.

Working group

European Schoolnet has set up an Artificial Intelligence in Education Working Group composed of  experts from ministries of education, public education authorities, and related public organisations across 20 European countries. Its goal is to address the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in K12 education, focusing on teaching, learning, and assessment, and looking at policy initiatives, practices and evidence from research to support policy learning in a cross-country context. Find more information about the working group.

Events

EMINENT, the annual conference of European Schoolnet addressed the question "When does AI make sense in schools", in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports of Spain, and with the support of the EU funded project Agile EDU.
