In this episode of the European Schoolnet Podcast, we speak with Professor Kim Schildkamp (University of Twente) and Professor Jan Vanhoof (University of Antwerp) about how schools can build a culture of meaningful and ethical data use. Together, they discuss the challenges schools face when working with data, the importance of data literacy, and how data can be used to support professional learning, reflection, and school improvement.

    This podcast is part of the Agile EDU project co-funded by the European Union and whose aim is to support inclusive and high-quality digital education, focusing on offering evidence from research and practice, and policy initiatives, on the use of data about student learning. The project runs for a three-year period. So far, Agile EDU has facilitated the exchange of knowledge among education authorities during expert workshops and dialogue labs and produced a literature review, nine case studies and 18 learning stories on the use of data about students learning and a MOOC targeting teachers. A final report will provide guidelines and recommendations on the topic for education stakeholders to be presented in December 2025 at EMINENT 2025. This is a project coordinated by European Schoolnet and with partners from the University College Copenhagen (Denmark), University of Oslo (Norway), Portuguese Ministry of Education (Portugal), Foundation Empieza por Educar (Spain), and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (Sweden); with the French and Slovenian Ministries of Education are associated partners.

Prof. Dr. Kim Schildkamp

Professor, Faculty of Behavioural, Management, and Social Sciences of the University of Twente 

Prof. Dr. Kim Schildkamp is a full professor in the Faculty of Behavioural, Management, and Social Sciences of the University of Twente in the Netherlands. She is the chair of the Department for Teacher Development. Her research focusses on data-informed decision making for learning and development, which includes the use of data and AI in education. She is also a visiting professor at SePU at the University of Inland Norway. And she works for NPuls, a National Growth Fund programme for all public vocational education training schools, universities of applied sciences, and research universities in the Netherlands. For this program she focuses on professional development in data and AI literacy for teachers and students. Prof. Jan Vanhoof

Professor at the Department of Training and Education Sciences within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Antwerp

Jan Vanhoof is a Professor at the Department of Training and Education Sciences within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Antwerp. He holds degrees in Educational Sciences and Teacher Education. Currently, Jan Vanhoof is a member of the Edubron research group. His work focuses on quality assurance and school policy, with a particular emphasis on evidence-informed decision-making in schools. This includes research on evaluation processes and the effective use of information to drive school improvement.
