PATHWAY (2001-2013) evaluates existing educational methods to promote the effective, widespread use of inquiry- and problem-based science teaching in schools in Europe and beyond. The aim of the project is to set a pathway toward standards in inquiry based science education (IBSE) and to support teachers and schools in adopting this approach.

The project focuses on the following areas:

  • Inquiry activities for schools
Pathway builds a collection of open science educational resources and teaching practices integrated in school curricula that have proven efficient in promoting inquiry-based education
  • Connecting schools and science centres
Pathway supports closer collaboration between schools and science centres, linking formal and informal learning environments.
  • Connecting schools with scientific research
Collecting and presenting best practices in school-research collaboration
  • Teacher professional development
Pathway organizes workshops and seminars for teachers on different aspects of inquiry-based science education and supports creating teachers’ communities of practice

The outputs of the project will include (1) Instructional models, helping teachers to organise their classes effectively, (2) Documentation and methods, supporting teachers in adopting IBSE, and a (3) collection of open educational resources and teaching practices.

Pathway project is coordinated by the Centre of Maths and Science Education, University of Bayreuth, Germany. European Schoolnet is leading the testing and validation of the proposed IBSE approaches and activities to identify their impact on students’ motivation and learning outcomes.

The project is funded under the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development.
